“The Phenom” follows the story of Hopper Gibson, a major-league rookie pitcher who, after a series of wild pitches on national television, is demoted to the minor leagues. Seeking help for his sudden inaccuracy, he undergoes therapy sessions with an unconventional sports psychologist, Dr. Mobley. During these sessions, deep-seated traumas tied to his overbearing father, Hopper Sr., surface.

Previously a failed ballplayer, Hopper Sr. instilled strict “rules” in his son, particularly about leaving emotions off the mound. These past experiences, combined with the pressures of the sport, have left Hopper grappling with issues of masculinity, trauma, and the weight of societal expectations.
